An Irish Country Village is a sequel to An Irish Country Doctor (see previous post), but it’s not necessary to read them both or in order. Many of the same characters as in the first book return, we just get to know them a little better. The story moves along with great descriptions of the clothes, cars, music and values of the era. A bit of nostalgia with a few Irish recipes thrown in.

A pleasant enough book but it lacks the emotion of the James Herriot books, which I think it is trying to emulate. Plot and subplot outcomes are predictable with little dramatic suspense. There is a glossary of Irish words, but most of the ones I tried to look up were not included. After 400 or so pages there is nothing to make you ask for more.
Comment by Jeannette Ross October 22, 2008 @ 11:48 amSince it takes place in the 1960s, It does provide, however, an interesting comparison to the Ireland of the 1930s-1940s of Angela’s Ashes. Completely different countries, but then one is fiction and one is real.
